French Connection Hello Closes 14 Stores

Founded in 1980, French Connection Hello designs, produces and distributes branded fashion clothing, footwear and accessories with a retail network in the UK, Europe and US as well as online, wholesale and licensing. The brand operates in the fashion orientated market place with a distinctive range of quality products and is at the leading edge of high street fashion.

Its iconic FCUK branding tapped into the logo-laden zeitgeist of the Nineties, and simple T-shirts emblazoned with the controversial slogan were worn with combat pants and a girl power pout (or the appropriate parka and scowl depending on your gender). But as style moved from combative and exuberant to something more staid and safe, the brand struggled to adjust, and The  french connection keep in touch was left behind. Yesterday the company turned the sign to closed on 14 of its stores, in locations including Bluewater and Brent Cross.

The brand has also had to cut costs in recent years, and this isn’t the first time that it has resorted to shutting stores in order to save money. In 2010, founder Paul Marks sold the loss-making Nicole Farhi label to close 14 stores and pull the business back from the red.

One of the greatest crime thrillers ever made, William Friedkin’s 1971 film The French Connection stars Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider as NYPD narcotics detectives Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle and Buddy “Cloudy” Russo. The film has long been considered a benchmark for the way that it captures New York’s ugly underbelly in gritty, documentary-style. Its famous car chase is still a thrilling sequence of irresponsible brilliance to watch.
